A cold, mostly frozen land bordered on all sides by vicious enemies. In the capital of Frostmarris, its Kings and Queens have held fast against all foes. The people are warriors at heart, and the rulers fight alongside their soldiers. Of the last eight monarchs, only two have died in their beds, and only one had ruled for longer than twenty years. Each and every one knows their war cry well, and will summon forth their army to drive the enemy from their home.
Blood! Blast! And Fire!
King Redrought Strong-in-the-Arm Lindenshield, Bear of the North, Defender of the Realm, Descendant of Thor
An enormous man with red hair that has a tendency to only speak at one volume: booming. His battle standard is a white polar bear on a blue background. Before Cry of the Icemark began, he had won a battle against their Vampric Majesties in the Ghost Wars. He is killed in the first battle of the war against the Polypontian Empire. He is Thirrin's father.
Queen Thirrin Freer Strong-in-the-Arm Lindenshield, Wildcat of the North, Ruler of the Icemark
At fourteen, Thirrin is rather young to be thrust into the world of ruling the Icemark. Tall for her age, she is smart, clever, but also has something of a temper on her. With pale skin and auburn hair, she stands out compared to most of the Icemark. While at times she seems naught but a young, frightened girl, at other times she becomes a fierce and powerful Queen who commands respect from all who meet her.
Oskan Witch's Son
A tall boy of fifteen years, Oskan is a skilled healer with both magic and herbs. His mother was White Annis, a good witch who taught him what she knew of healing before she passed away. His father is an unknown in Cry of the Icemark, aside from being a creature of great power who was not human, vampire, or any creature of the mortal realm. He has the ability to use offensive magic, but only does so once, calling lightning from the sky to save Thirrin's life. It leaves him horribly burned, but the great Goddess grants him her blessing and gift of healing. He is to be Witchfather when the leader of the good witches of the north passes away, only the second ever to be so.
Oskan understands the language of the Wolf-folk, and often translates long-distance messages when one of the werewolves isn't available.
Elemnestra Celeste, Basilea of the Hypolitan, Commander of the Sacred Regiment
A race of people who live in the Icemark and swear fealty to its ruler. The Hypolitan are ruled by women rather than men, and a male's viewpoint is usually not requested or wanted aside from the Basilea's consort. They are fierce and proud warriors, masters of horse-riding and the bow, and Elemnestra embodies this perfectly. Unfortunately her unit's hit and run tactics, while effective, also end up being her doom, the entire squad wiped out by the cannons of the Polypontians.
She is related to Thirrin by virtue of Thirrin's mother being her youngest sister.
Olememnon Stagapoulos, Son of the Mother, one-time Consort of the Basilea of the Hypolitan, Commander of the Infantry of the Moon
A large man in charge of the infantry unit of the Hypolitan. He is gentle and fierce, kind and unforgiving. He briefly sorrows over his consort's death, but is pulled from his depression by Thirrin. He becomes good friends with both Grishmak and Tharaman, and often challenges the snow leopard to eating and drinking contests.
Grimswald
The late King's manservant, he attended the King and was quite fond of him. He becomes Thirrin's manservant after Redrought's passing. Described as a wizened old man. His official position is Chamberlain-of-the-Royal-Paraphernalia.
Maggiore Totus
More commonly known as Maggie, he is Thirrin's tutor and a scholar. As the war begins, he makes it a personal mission to record every detail for future generations to read. Maggie is also the only person in the Icemark to wear glasses, or spectoculums as he calls them, which he invented himself. He comes from the Southern Continent.
Primplepuss
A tabby cat that was beloved by the late King, she is a constant companion of Maggie's and is also quite fond of Tharaman. She begins as a young kitten and matures into an adult by the end of Cry of the Icemark.
A land to the north of the Icemark. Two sets of rulers control parts of the land.
Their Vampiric Majesties and their undead kin are one. Pale, undead, ever-lasting unless killed by another's hand, the vampires have ruled since a time before time from their Blood Palace. With the ability to turn between a human-like form and that of a great bat, the vampires rule both sky and ground. They command both their own kind, along with other creatures such as rock trolls, the giant Snowy Owls, and zombies.
The Wolf-folk and their king are the other power of the realm. Werewolves are described as an eery mix of human and wolf, capable of speaking in both the common tongue of the Icemark and their own gruff, animalistic language. They run on both two and four legs as needed. There are various packs, but all answer to their king.
King Grishmak Blood-drinker, Lord of the Wolf-folk
Wearing the golden collar of the werewolf king, Grishmak is a strong, capable ruler. He has been king for over twenty years, and knows when Thirrin, a mere youngling who had no reason to trust him and his kind, has the potential to turn the tides of war between their species.
The Vampire King and Queen
They have been 'alive' for twelve hundred years and ruled for a thousand. They have a disliking for all those who are mortal. And their cold, proud nature coupled with a fighting skill that equals and can even best that of any man makes the Vampire King and Queen a force to be reckoned with. They are truly evil creatures, but even the most evil can be swayed into alliance. How true they hold to it is another matter entirely.
The Hub of the World is most northern part of the world, a great mountain extending beyond The-Land-of-the-Ghosts. Here, the snow never melts, and warmth is but a fleeting memory. There is a beauty in this dangerous land, where little grows and only the strongest creatures survive.
The Hub is ruled by the great Snow Leopards, giant cats that stand as tall as a military horse, with the strength even greater. Considered winter given animal form, their legends say that the One who created them loved their beauty and power as much as the adaptability and mind of humanity, and granted them the gift of speech so that its two favourite creations could one day meet.
But this rule is contested by the Ice Trolls who emerge at the depths of winter when the Hub is frozen to its very core.
Lord Tharaman-Thar, One Hundredth Thar of the Snow Leopards, Lord of the Icesheets, Scourge of the Ice Trolls
With eyes of red-amber, and fur white as snow and black as night, Tharaman-Thar is a sight to behold. As tall as or taller than a warhorse, he is the ruler of the Snow Leopard people. He is proud but fair to all his kin, a calm and collected ruler. And while he has his temper, should one insult his pride, he commends bravery and courage above all else. Words are nothing, it is action that should be looked upon as a judgement of a person.
Field Marshal Taradan
Tharaman's second-in-command of the armies of the Snow Leopards. Taradan has a good nature and a sense of humour. He gets along quite well with most of the human soldiers upon first arriving in the Icemark.
Ever confident, ever expanding. The Polypontian Empire is ruled more by its army than its Emperor. No matter where they go, the conquest continues, with each one beginning with three simple words.
Veni, Vidi, Vici.
I came, I saw, I conquered. So far, they haven't been wrong yet.
General Scipio Bellorum
The infamous general of the Empire. He rules its army, has never lost one of his wars of conquest, and always won every battle he personally commanded. In a way, he is quite mad, believing the impossible in that he cannot lose, cannot die.
